78827 - Laboratory of Chemistry and Organic Chemistry T (A-K)

Academic Year 2026/2027

  • Moduli: Laura Sisti (Modulo 1) Laura Sisti (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: In-person learning (entirely or partially) (Modulo 1); In-person learning (entirely or partially) (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering (cod. 6674)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student has gained direct experience in specific aspects of inorganic and organic chemistry. The student has also acquired the basic knowledge required to work safely in a chemical laboratory and has developed the ability to conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret experimental data.

Course contents

The basic knowledge of fundamental chemistry are necessary to attend with profit this course.

All lectures will be held in Italian. Therefore, knowledge of the Italian language is required in order to successfully follow the course and use the provided teaching material.

The chemistry lab course includes a series of practical activities during which the most common and basic chemical laboratory techniques will be taught, such as:

  • qualitative tests
  • synthesis and purification of organic compounds
  • chromatographic techniques
  • characterization techniques
  • quantitative analysis techniques

In particular, the following experiments will be carried out:

  • identification tests for some functional groups: alkenes, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones;
  • synthesis and crystallization of aspirin;
  • biodiesel synthesis;
  • polymer synthesis: nylon 6,6 and thermosetting resins;
  • molecular characterization through melting point determination and identification of functional groups using spectroscopic techniques;
  • separation and purification of products using chromatographic techniques;
  • complexometric titrations for the determination of metals in water samples.

Readings/Bibliography

The textbook suggested by the course Organic Chemisty contains most of the topics covered during the laboratory course.

Teaching methods

The course consists of classroom lectures and six laboratory practical sessions, with a mandatory minimum attendance requirement of at least four practical sessions.

Furthermore, considering the types of activities and teaching methods adopted, attendance of this educational activity requires all students to complete Modules 1 and 2 in e-learning mode [https://www.unibo.it/it/servizi-e-opportunita/salute-e-assistenza/salute-e-sicurezza/sicurezza-e-salute-nei-luoghi-di-studio-e-tirocinio ] and to attend Module 3 of the specific training on safety and health in the workplace. Information on the dates and attendance procedures for Module 3 can be found in the relevant section of the degree programme website.

Assessment methods

Oral examination based upon written reports on laboratory experiments delivered by the student at the end of the course.
