Learning outcomes

By the end of the laboratory the student: knows how to analyze and deal with different applications of the languages of contemporary art, in its specific field and interdisciplinary relations; knows how to recognize the role played by visual studies in the overall development of artistic research and their contribution to the processes of the cultural industry.

Course contents

The lab explores the influence of the visual arts on other related fields, from music to dance, and from cinema to fashion. It will therefore examine artistic research aimed at breaking down the barriers between the arts, not least with a view to understanding the transformations taking place in the media used. Particular attention will therefore be paid to the processes of hybridisation and cross-fertilisation between artistic languages. The analysis begins with the avant-garde movements of the early 20th century and extends to more recent developments, with numerous examples designed to illustrate the variety of approaches adopted.

Due to the laboratory nature of the course, the following bibliographical indications constitute only initial sources to be consulted for the identification of the case study to be covered:

Teaching methods

Assessment methods

Students are required to produce a visual essay based on the ideas explored during the workshop. Students are therefore required to prepare a PowerPoint presentation (to be saved as a PDF) comprising a total of 4 slides, illustrating an artist’s aesthetic through 3 works. The chosen artist must NOT be one of those covered by the lecturer during the two courses (the institutional course and the workshop), but may be a representative of the trends or areas of research addressed.

The first slide must include the artist’s first name and surname, the relevant dates and the geographical context of origin. The other three slides must show the works (one per slide) with a caption, structured as follows: artist’s name, title of the work (in italics), year of creation, technique, materials, dimensions and, where applicable, location (the museum or collection in which it is held). The works may also be accompanied by quotations from the artist that help to illustrate their artistic vision more clearly. In such cases, the source from which the quotation was taken should be indicated.

The images selected by the student may be taken from various sources, provided they are clear and of good resolution.

The file, exported as a PDF and named SURNAME_NAME, must be uploaded in good time to be assessed during the exam via the link provided on Virtuale.

Clarity, relevance, completeness of information and consistency of the presentation will be assessment criteria used to increase the mark awarded for the institutional component by 0 to 3 marks or to award honours, where applicable.

These assessment procedures apply to both attending and non-attending students.

Any use of AI, even minimal, constitutes a violation of the principle of honesty and fairness set out in the Policy and will result in the cancellation of the examination.
