96403 - Phenomenology of Contemporary Art. Fundamentals (1) (M-Z)

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the student: knows the fundamental categories and practices of contemporary art, both in terms of technical-linguistic and theoretical aspects; understands the role assumed by the visual arts in the transition between the 19th and 21st centuries, in their specific development and relation to the parallel trends of other artistic disciplines; is able to understand the contribution made by contemporary art to the development of visual culture with particular attention to technological, media, and social issues.

Course contents

This course addresses twentieth-century artistic practices aimed at overcoming traditional representation and artistic techniques. Beginning with the experimentation with new media and materials within the historical avant-gardes (Cubism, Futurism, Constructivism, Dada etc.), the many ways in which everyday objects, the body, the environment and technologies have been used or reinvented by the most important artists of the second half of the Twentieth century. Special attention will be paid to artistic practices that redefine the work as a physical and mental experience, soliciting direct participation of the viewer.

Assessment methods

The final examination will consist of a multiple-choice questionnaire on the topics covered during the course. The test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions with 4 alternative answers. Each correct answer is worth 1.5 points. There is no penalty for wrong answers. The time available for the test is 30 minutes. The test result will be visible immediately after the test has been completed.

The questionnaire includes questions of a historical-critical nature or reasoning questions on the topics covered in the course, as well as tests to recognise images taken from the teaching material made available to students, for which students are only required to identify the author from among the four alternatives proposed.

The test results will be available immediately after the test has been completed. Once the student has seen their mark, they can decide whether to accept it and have it recorded at the end of the exam session, or to reject it and retake the test in a future exam session.

The assessment methods are valid for both attending and non-attending students.

The use of AI tools during the examination is prohibited in any form, including chatbots, text generators, advanced translators, content synthesizers, and tools integrated into devices. Any use of AI, even minimal, constitutes a violation of the principle of honesty and fairness set out in the Policy and will result in the cancellation of the examination.
