91278 - Project Work in Natural Language Processing

Academic Year 2026/2027

  • Teaching Mode: In-person learning (entirely or partially)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Artificial Intelligence (cod. 6700)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student is able to apply the knowledge acquired in Natural Language Processing in order to carry out autonomously a project focusing on a topic agreed upon with the teacher.

Course contents

This teaching activity is about developing a project in natural language processing or natural language understanding, following the course 91258 - Natural Language Processing. Upon request, the teaching staff can offer suggestions and help in defining the topic and objective of the project work. The student is, however, encouraged to take the initiative by reviewing the relevant literature and proposing a project work, for instance, about:

  • exploring a foundational aspect;
  • exploring NLP methods for low-resource languages or languages other than English;
  • working on a challenging application;
  • working on a research topic;
  • preparing a literature survey on a research topic;
  • significantly expanding a project developed within the NLP course.

The proposal has to be approved by the teaching staff before the student starts working on the project. Working as a group is encouraged.

Particularly innovative projects may receive extra support aimed to a possible submission of the work to a relevant scientific event.

Readings/Bibliography

Scientific papers and pointers provided by the teaching staff, in addition to the readings and bibliography of the course 91258 - Natural Language Processing.

Teaching methods

The project activity does not require participation to lectures. Once the project's aim and scope are defined in collaboration with the teach staff, the student (team) works in autonomy. Regular progress meetings can be organized.

Assessment methods

Project report and presentation, in presence. Exception apply (see below). The project report must be uploaded on the virtuale platform at least 1 week before the presentation date. Dates for project work presentation will be published periodically on AlmaEsami. In case of particular needs to obtain credits by a deadline, if no dates are published in the following months, you should contact the teacher by email to ask a date. Please specify "NLP Project Work presentation" in the subject.

Use of AI

The work materials produced and submitted will be validated through the oral interview for compliance with the policy on the use of AI (see "teaching tools").

Possibility of remote presentation

All project presentations must be done in presence. Exceptions are granted only in cases of continued impossibility of traveling from abroad due to force majeure (conflicts, epidemics) or if the student is abroad for the preparation of the final exam. Sitting an exam at the University of Bologna, even remotely, during the Erasmus+ period is not allowed.

Teaching tools

The student can freely choose any relevant tool for project development and support.

Use of AI

The use of AI for writing the project report is prohibited and constitutes a violation of academic integrity. The use of AI is permitted only for coding support, for drawing graphs/tables, and for polishing up the material written by the student. All use of AI must be declared. The ownership of the conceptual work, experimental design, choice of reference material, analysis, etc is the student's only.
