Learning outcomes
The student will get basic knowledge on the chemical structure, properties, preparation pathways and reactivity of the main industrially relevant groups of organic compounds.
Course contents
The main topics covered in the course are:
- Organic Chemistry and its scientific, technological, and industrial relevance in the fields of chemistry, pharmaceuticals, food science, and the bioeconomy, with particular emphasis on the use of fossil fuels, non-food biomass, and residual biomass as feedstocks.
- Molecular formulas of organic compounds and their graphical representations.
- Classification of organic compounds. Traditional nomenclature and IUPAC systematic nomenclature.
- Isomerism in Organic Chemistry: constitutional (structural) isomerism and stereoisomerism. Absolute and relative configuration; the R/S and E/Z nomenclature systems.
- Organic reactions and their classification. Review of chemical thermodynamics and kinetics. General principles of organic reaction mechanisms and their thermodynamic and kinetic aspects. Electronic effects (inductive and resonance effects) and steric effects in the reactivity of organic compounds.
- Aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons: structure, nomenclature, physical properties, preparation, and reactivity. Polyfunctional organic compounds: nomenclature, physical properties, preparation, and reactivity.
- Heterocyclic and aromatic compounds: structure, nomenclature, physical properties, preparation, and reactivity.
- Halogenated organic compounds: structure, nomenclature, physical properties, preparation, and reactivity.
- Alcohols and phenols, ethers and epoxides, thiols, thioethers, and other organic sulfur derivatives: structure, nomenclature, physical properties, preparation, and reactivity.
- Aldehydes and ketones: structure, nomenclature, physical properties, preparation, and reactivity.
- Carboxylic acids and their derivatives (acid halides, esters, amides, anhydrides, etc.): structure, nomenclature, physical properties, preparation, and reactivity.
- Amines and other nitrogen-containing organic compounds: structure, nomenclature, physical properties, preparation, and reactivity.
- Biomolecules: chemical structure, nomenclature, physical properties, biological functions, and reactivity of lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, and nucleic acids.

Assessment methods
The examination consists of a 2-hour written test.
The test comprises four questions: two general questions, each worth up to 10 marks, and two more specific questions, each worth up to 5 marks, for a maximum total of 30 marks.
During the examination, only the periodic table may be used. Examination paper will be provided; therefore, students are required to bring only the necessary writing materials. The use of artificial intelligence tools and any other digital device or tool not explicitly authorized is strictly prohibited during the examination. Any such use constitutes a violation of the University's principles of academic integrity and will be dealt with in accordance with the University's regulations.
Students with Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) or with temporary or permanent disabilities are invited to contact the University's dedicated support office well in advance (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/it ). The office will arrange any appropriate examination accommodations, which must be submitted to the instructor for approval at least 15 days before the examination date.
