Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to equip students with the fundamental principles of solid and structural mechanics required to analyze stress and strain states in beams and frames under various loading conditions, including axial stress, bending moments, torsion, and shear. Additionally, the course provides foundational knowledge of the mechanical properties of materials, experimental techniques, and quality control procedures. Students will develop the skills necessary to solve statically determinate and indeterminate structures and perform structural safety assessments.

Teaching methods

The course content will be entirely covered during the lectures. The course consists of lectures and exercise sessions devoted to the practical application of the concepts presented in class. The instructors will supervise students during these activities.

Assessment methods

The assessment of the expected learning outcomes is based on the following components:

  • Assignments: six take-home assignments distributed throughout the course (assigned on Thursday and due the following Tuesday), contributing up to 3 points to the final grade.

  • Written examination: three exercises to be completed within three hours (maximum score: 30 points).

  • Oral examination: ten multiple-choice questions followed by a discussion (approximately one hour), contributing up to ±5 points to the written examination score.

Both the written and oral examinations are closed-book.

To obtain a passing grade (minimum: 18/30), students must demonstrate knowledge of the fundamental concepts of the subject, the ability to apply them critically, and an appropriate use of technical terminology. Higher grades (up to 30/30 with honours) will be awarded to students who demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the subject, strong critical reasoning skills, and a clear and concise presentation of the material.

Students who do not pass the examination may retake it in any subsequent examination session. Typically, six examination sessions are offered each academic year.
