Learning outcomes

To achieve basic knowledge on techniques of medical imaging and radioprotection in pediatrics.

Course contents

The course provides an in-depth study of pediatric radiographic anatomy across the main anatomical regions examined using conventional radiology and digital fluoroscopy, with continuous reference to the technical, communication, and radiation protection aspects specific to pediatric patients.

Main topics:
· general principles of pediatric radiographic anatomy;
· anatomical characteristics of pediatric patients across different age groups;
· morphological and proportional differences between pediatric and adult anatomy;
· skeletal development, ossification centers, and the main anatomical landmarks of the growing child;
· general principles of radiographic positioning in pediatric patients;
· criteria for the technical and image quality assessment of pediatric radiographs;
· radiographic anatomy of the pediatric chest;
· radiographic anatomy of the pediatric abdomen;
· radiographic anatomy of the pediatric skeleton;
· use of contrast media in pediatric patients;
· main pediatric fluoroscopic examinations and procedures;
· the role of the Radiologic Technologist (RT) in the preparation, positioning, assistance, and technical management of pediatric examinations;
· communication with the child and caregivers during the examination;
· radiation protection in pediatric imaging;
· selected imaging examples aimed at anatomical recognition, understanding radiographic projections, and applying the principles of pediatric radiation protection.

The discussion of any pathological findings is intended exclusively for educational purposes and is used to support anatomical recognition, understanding of spatial relationships, and the correct technical-radiological interpretation of the anatomical region being examined.
