Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to develop the ability to read process flow-sheets and to evaluate the effect of different operational parameters on the outcome of chemical processes. In particular, the thermal effects of chemical reactions will be investigated to elucidate the challenges in process development, safety and scale-up.
Course contents
The course will cover the following topics:
- Quality assurance in the chemical industry: ISO 9000 quality management systems. Lectures and in-class exercises with the instructor.
- Lean Thinking: in-class meeting with a consulting professional and seminar/exercise.
- Safety management in industry: risk, severity, probability of occurrence, design of intrinsically safer processes guided by thermal analysis and adiabatic heating measurement, runaway scenarios. In-class seminar with a company representative (BASF) and a tour of the production plant.
- Literature research and presentation writing: in-class exercise on a scientific topic agreed upon in advance with the instructor.
- Laboratory experience:
1) Liquid-phase organic synthesis with a heterogeneous solid catalyst, analysis of reaction products using gas chromatography techniques, and quantitative analysis using the internal standard method.
2) Experience in research laboratories, use of laboratory-scale chemical plants, description of plant flow sheets and HAZOPs.

Teaching methods
The course consists of individual and group exercises and laboratory activities. Some of the activities will be carried out in collaboration with companies.
In consideration of the types of activities and teaching methods adopted, the attendance of this training activity requires that all students of modules 1 and 2 carry out in e-learning mode and the participation in module 3 of specific training on safety and health in the places of study. Information on dates and methods of attendance of module 3 can be consulted in the appropriate section of the study course website.
Assessment methods
The judgment relating to the various laboratory modules will be unique and will be expressed through suitability/unsuitability. The assessment will be based on: drafting of reports or final group work relating to the experiences carried out, observance of the safety standards, compilation of the laboratory notebook, compliance with the deadlines for the delivery of the reports. There is no final exam. Passing the course will be conditional on attending at least 75% of the lessons and exercises.
