Learning outcomes
At the end of the teaching the student is aware: - on a theoretical level, of part of the current debate on the concept of monument/document and cultural good, of reflections on the theme of authenticity, of the specificity of restoration with respect to other forms of recovery, of the difference between maintenance and conservation; - on an operational level, of the problems of intervention on pre-existing buildings with particular regard to the concept of minimum intervention, the relationship between old and new, between science and technique in restoration, analytical and diagnostic controls aimed at the compatibility and reversibility of materials, and the relationship between restoration, consolidation and plant upgrading. At the end of the course the student is able to: - perform historical-documentary research aimed at the knowledge of the artifact; - recognize its main diachronic transformations also through stratigraphic reading; - analyze its material consistency and state of preservation; - verify the compatibility of new destinations with the vocation of use of the asset; - design suitable conservation/restoration interventions with particular reference to regulatory aspects (seismic, accessibility, plant engineering).

Other directions will be provided in the course of the lectures.
Teaching methods
The course is divided into ex cathedra lectures and exercises. The lectures support the exercises on the specific project topic, and cover issues of restoration theory and history, method and general issues, technical and site aspects.
The exercise will be carried out, with the support of the lecturers and tutors, at construction sites identified from year to year, based on agreements with owners and operators of the same, public and private.
Assessment methods
The Architectural Restoration Laboratory (C.I.12 CFU, 168 hours) consists in addition to the characterizing module/teaching of Architectural Restoration (8 CFU,120 hours) of a module/teaching of Conservation of Materials in Historic Buildings (4CFU, 48 hours).
The Architectural Restoration Laboratory examination includes verification of learning of the content of all modules/teaching that make up the Integrated Course and is conducted in a single examination paper.
In the examination at the end of the course, through the examination and a discussion of the papers produced, related to the restoration of a historic building, the achievement of the teaching objectives will be verified:
- be able to set up and conduct historical research applied to the property being practiced;
- be able to draw up a geometric survey for restoration (in-depth study of construction details);
-be able to draw up a structural picture of the building, with identification of static and dynamic disruption phenomena;
-be able to identify materials and note them on previously produced geometric surveys and on appropriate analytical sheets;
-be able to identify forms of decay and note them on previously produced geometric surveys and on appropriate analytical sheets;
-be able to connect forms of degradation to their possible causes, noting them on the surveys and on appropriate analytical sheets and defining interventions to reduce or remove them;
--be able to formulate a factory-compatible use program (functional organization chart);
-demonstrate applied plant engineering skills;
-be able to draw up a project according to the various levels required by the sector regulations (preliminary; final; executive);
-be able to define the specifications and applied metric-estimates;
The exercise follows a path that from the cognitive stage, gradually arrives at the design stage.
The stages of this path can be summarized as follows: -historical-critical investigation, survey, examination of materials and construction techniques, analysis of decay, proposal for conservation and restoration (see above).
The final grade will be determined by the sum of evaluations related to the following criteria:
1 - Knowledge of theoretical content, bibliography and acquisition of instrumental skills;
2 -Coherence of the design path (from the historical critical analysis of the artifact to the proposed use);
3 - Knowledge of the disciplinary aspects addressed by the Historic Building Materials Conservation module (discussion in the exam); and
4 - In-depth design research (project boards)
5 - Clarity and effectiveness in exposition: quality of papers and property of language;
