Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will have acquired the ability to analyze, under different operating conditions, the characteristic transport phenomena occurring in physical and chemical processes of relevance to the process industries.
Course contents
The course includes a series of laboratory sessions in which students, organized into small groups, perform experiments following an introductory presentation of the experimental procedures by the instructor or technician.
The laboratory activities focus on the following topics:
- Pressure drop measurements and characteristic pump curves.
- Ultrafiltration of a polymer solution using a spiral-wound membrane module.
- Measurement of the gas–liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient in a mechanically stirred bioreactor.
- Measurement of the diffusion coefficient in liquids.

Teaching methods
Theoretical presentations and lab experiments carried out by the students supervised by the lab technicians
Assessment methods
- Mandatory attendance at all laboratory sessions and submission of a written report for each laboratory experiment.
- Oral examination, during which one of the four laboratory experiments will be discussed in depth.
Note: The laboratory reports are a mandatory requirement for admission to the oral examination but do not contribute to the final grade.
