Course contents

The workshop Pedagogical Competences for Reception: Designing Educational Interventions in Complex Contexts aims to strengthen the pedagogical and intercultural skills of professionals who coordinate operational groups and design interventions in out-of-school educational settings characterized by high cultural, linguistic and social complexity.
In particular, it focuses on the inclusion of migrants, asylum seekers and refugees, highlighting the role of the pedagogist as a mediator between individuals, institutions and local communities through practices of critical meta-reflection that help professionals recognize their own positionality.

Through a reflective and postcolonial approach, the workshop encourages participants to deconstruct hegemonic interpretations and assistential practices, adopting a decolonial perspective that interrogates power relations within reception systems and institutional narratives on migration. It also promotes co-construction processes that acknowledge the knowledge and experiences of migrants as legitimate sources of understanding.

A critical analysis of social policies and local practices will enable participants to understand the functioning of the services involved and to develop educational strategies that respond to emerging needs. The workshop integrates theoretical sessions, case analyses, simulations and participatory design activities, providing concrete tools for acting with critical and design-oriented competence within pathways of reception and social inclusion.

The course is also open to international students. All materials are available in English.

Readings/Bibliography

The in-depth readings (in Italian and/or English) will be provided during the workshop.

Teaching methods

The workshop is structured around lectures, individual work, and small-group activities, including moments of discussion, reflection, and in-depth exploration of the topics addressed.

The program will also include the viewing of video materials and discussions with key witnesses/informants.

Assessment methods

Students will be assessed at the end of the workshop on the basis of the work carried out during the planned activities (individual work, small-group exercises, moments of reflection and discussion) and on the learning outcomes achieved (in terms of the knowledge and competences expected from the workshop). Classroom exercises will therefore serve as assessment opportunities and will be evaluated by the instructor.
