Learning outcomes

Students will acquire basic knowledge of verbal and non-verbal communication, the methodology for studying communication processes, and the main factors that influence doctor–patient communication and interactions among healthcare professionals.

Through practical exercises and laboratory activities, by the end of the course students will also be able to identify the main communication errors and barriers to effective communication.

Students will develop the skills necessary for effective communication in the transmission of medical and scientific information and in interactions with other healthcare professionals, as well as with patients and their families.

Course contents

Specific course contents:

- Methodology for the study of communication processes

- Communication of medical and scientific information

- Communication with patients and their families

- Communication with the different professional roles within the healthcare setting

- The main communication errors and barriers to communication

- Factors modulating responses to illness, stress, and pain: individual factors (cognitive and emotional) and social factors (family, cultural, relational, and organizational)

Teaching methods

The course includes lectures and practical exercises carried out in class by students, either individually or in small groups.

Assessment methods

The course is part of the Integrated Course (I.C.) in General Psychology and Medical Anthropology. To record the final grade for the I.C., students must have passed the exams in General Psychology and Medical Anthropology and obtained eligibility for the course Foundations of Communication in the Medical Profession.

 

To pass the course, students must obtain eligibility, which will be granted upon attendance of at least 60% of the lectures and completion of all the required practical activities.
