Learning outcomes

The global aim of this course which includes lectures and language classes - is to provide students with an expert knowledge of a number of aspects of Spanish linguistics, enabling them not only to communicate effectively in Spanish, but also to think critically about and describe the metalinguistic factors at play in language use. This aim will be achieved by providing students with theoretical knowledge related to one or more of the following areas of Spanish linguistics: phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicology, semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, stylistics and corpus linguistics. The focus of the course will be on real language use, with authentic texts (written and/ or spoken, belonging to different registers) and electronic language corpora used as examples. Language classes aim to improve students linguistic competence; over the two year period students knowledge of Spanish should reach an equivalent level to C2 in accordance with the European framework in all four abilities. These classes will work in connection with the lectures to improve students writing skills in particular.

Course contents

The objectives of this course are:

1) to reinforce students' theoretical and applied knowledge of linguistic and pragmatic discourse analysis in Spanish, with special attention to text semantics, specialized discourse, persuasion, critical discourse studies, and various phenomena in current communication;
2) to introduce students to the field of corpus linguistics and the methods and tools of digital humanities applied to the analysis of oral, written, and digital discourse.

Erasmus+ (incoming)

This course is taught in the 1st semester of the academic year (september-december). Only those incoming students who complete their stay (one semester or the entire year) starting in September will be admitted to the course.

ERASMUS+ students should contact the instructor for SPANISH LINGUISTICS 1 EXERCISES (Pilar Asarta) and the professor for SPANISH LINGUISTICS 1 (lezioni frontali, Ana Pano Alamán) within the first two weeks of the course to be properly informed about the required language level, the programs, and the exam methods for both parts of the course.

Erasmus+ students who have not contacted both Asarta and Pano Alaman at least two months before the exam (January-February) will not be admitted to the exam for both parts of the course.

Teaching methods

SPANISH LINGUISTICS 1 (Prof. Ana Pano Alamán)

Gradual introduction to:

  • Linguistic levels: language
  • Language variation: speech
  • Discourse: critical analysis
  • Pragmatics: main concepts and phenomena
  • Corpus linguistics applied to the analysis of written, oral, and digital texts

The topics covered will be accompanied by multimedia presentations, several examples drawn from various text types; case analysis; corpus design and corpus-based analysis.

 

Assessment methods

SPANISH LINGUISTICS 1 (Prof. Ana Pano Alamán)

Oral exam: The oral exam consists of a discussion in Spanish (level C1), which will focus on the required texts listed in the Bibliography and one chosen text among those listed as a choice. The student, in dialogue with the teacher, will summarize the content and reflect on the topics covered, providing examples.

As an alternative option to this final oral exam, the student may complete two practical activities, which will be submitted during the course and will be graded. The content, method, and submission period for these activities will be explained in detail in class.

IMPORTANT: The written test of Spanish Linguistics 1 Exercises* is preparatory for the oral exam of Spanish Linguistics 1 ('lezioni frontali'). It is necessary to have passed the written test before taking the oral linguistics exam.

The final grade for the Spanish Linguistics 1 exam (written test + oral exam) is obtained by calculating 1/3 of the final grade of Spanish Linguistics Exercises (36 hours) plus 2/3 of the grade of the Spanish Linguistics main course / 'lezioni frontali' exam (60 hours).
