Learning outcomes
Course contents
Why does the social worker do what they do? What are the values and principles that guide their professional actions?
This course introduces students to the ethical and deontological foundations of Social Work, providing a compass to navigate the profession. Through the analysis of the Code of Ethics and a critical approach to ethical issues, students will begin to develop a professional awareness that will accompany them throughout their educational and professional journey.
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Understand the ethical and deontological principles that regulate the profession;
- Analyze the Code of Ethics and apply it to real-life situations;
- Reflect on the ethical responsibilities of social workers in different intervention contexts;
- Develop an initial critical perspective on the moral challenges and ethical dilemmas of the profession.

Teaching methods
The course will adopt a dialogical and interactive methodology, with strong student engagement. Lessons will be structured to encourage discussion and critical thinking through participatory group discussions, case analyses, the use of visual tools, and collective activities.
To bring students closer to the professional reality, practicing social workers will be invited to share their direct experiences, providing insights into the ethical and deontological principles of the profession. The approach will be dynamic, fostering dialogue and active reasoning rather than purely theoretical learning.
Assessment methods
The course requires mandatory attendance.
The exam will consist of an oral interview, aimed at assessing notonly the student's knowledge of the content but also their ability to think critically and reflectively on the topics covered.
Students are not required to memorize and recite the texts but rather to demonstrate their understanding and internalization of the fundamental principles of the profession. During the exam, students must:
- Provide clear and structured responses to the questions;
- Use professional and appropriate language;
- Connect concepts effectively, demonstrating a comprehensive and integrated understanding of the topics discussed.
The goal is not only to assess what has been studied but also how the student can apply and interpret these principles in real professional contexts.
