Learning outcomes

The student acquires relational skills for interactions between healthcare providers and patients, including an understanding of the asymmetry in this relationship and the associated psychodynamic elements. They learn about work-related stress and burnout in the professional context, develop effective communication strategies, and are able to enhance the perceived quality of the relationship.

Course contents

OBJECT AND METHODS OF EXPERIMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY: Experimental paradigms and the study of emotional and cognitive processes.
EMOTIONS AND MOTIVATION: Physiological bases of emotions. Subcomponents of emotional responses. Primary (basic) and secondary emotions. Characteristics of basic emotions. Expression and recognition of emotions. Cultural modulation of emotions. Primary and secondary motivations, with particular focus on work motivation.
STUDY OF INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES: Various approaches to studying interindividual differences. Personality inventories. Assessment of cognitive abilities.
STRESS AND COPING: Stressful events: definition and characteristics. Acute and chronic stress. Physiological responses to stress. Psychological responses to stress. Coping strategies. Burnout syndrome. Stress and work motivation. Stress and conflicts in the workplace and interdisciplinary work groups

Teaching methods

The course includes lectures and practical exercises conducted in the classroom by students individually or in small groups.

Assessment methods

The exam for the course consists of a written test with 31 multiple-choice questions (5 answer options). There is no penalty for incorrect answers.
