Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide knowledge on the operating mechanisms and management criteria of the main equipment used in the chemical industry. In particular, students will be able to understand the following fundamental elements of chemical plant engineering: fluid flow, heat exchange equipment, mass transfer equipment, staged and continuous-contact apparatuses, utilities for plant operations, and industrial instrumentation for measuring flow rate, level, pressure, and temperature. Students will also acquire basic knowledge of control systems and the fundamental operating principles of equipment for the treatment of gaseous effluents.
Course contents
- Fluid flow and handling devices
- Heat exchange equipment.
- Mass transfer equipment.
- Staged equipment.
- Continuous-contact equipment.
- Auxiliary fluids for the operation of chemical plants.
- Industrial instrumentation for measuring flow rate, level, pressure, and temperature.
- Introduction to control systems.
- Management methods for batch, continuous, and semi-continuous chemical reactors.

Teaching methods
Lectures and classroom exercises, according to the official schedule.
During the lectures, the course contents topics are presented and discussed
During the exercises, in order to help students develop the ability to perform basic calculations and to prepare for the exam, practical problems are solved in class. Throughout this activity, the instructor adjusts the difficulty of the problems and clarifies any doubts.
Assessment methods
The final exam is intended to assess the achievement of the following learning objectives:
-
ability to use the analytical and calculation tools presented during lectures and exercises to understand the functioning of equipment;
-
ability to apply the results obtained to improve the performance of process plants and equipment.
Learning assessment is carried out through an oral examination to be taken at the end of the course. The oral exam consists of solving exercises and discussing topics covered during the lectures.
Students with learning disorders and\or temporary or permanent disabilities: please, contact the office responsible (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en/for-students ) as soon as possible so that they can propose acceptable adjustments. The request for adaptation must be submitted in advance (15 days before the exam date) to the lecturer, who will assess the appropriateness of the adjustments, taking into account the teaching objectives.Teaching tools
The educational material useful for exam preparation (lecture notes) is made available to students in electronic format via the internet. To access the material, students must log in to the website: https://virtuale.unibo.it/
