Learning outcomes
At the end of the module, students will be familiar with the fundamental elements (content, methods and tools) for analysing Russian literary civilisation; they will be able to apply them to specific literary texts; they will be able to independently develop further cultural and literary knowledge and skills at a higher level and apply them to a wide range of other specific literary texts.
Course contents
The aim of the course is to examine Russian fairy tales in terms of their thematic and structural characteristics in relation to other genres of folklore and ancient literary tradition, using different methodological perspectives (in particular the approach of V. Propp and the psychoanalytic approach of B. Bettelheim). It will be also considered how fairy tale tradition is present in the work of a great 19th-century author, L. N. Tolstoy (with his narodnye rasskazy), and of a contemporary author, L. S. Petruševskaja.

Teaching methods
Attendance is compulsory and students are expected to participate actively in the course. The theoretical introduction to the topics will be accompanied by practical exercises aimed at understanding and analysing Russian texts and developing independent analytical skills.
Assessment methods
The exam consists of an oral test during which students' knowledge acquired during the course and their independent ability to analyse literary texts will be assessed.
Il voto della prova orale sarà determinato dall’applicazione delle seguenti definizioni dell’ECTS Grading Scale:
A [≈ 30/30 – 30/30 e lode]: outstanding performance with only minor errors;
B [≈ 27/30 – 29/30]: above the average standard but with some errors;
C [≈ 24/30 – 26/30]: generally sound work with a number of notable errors;
D [≈ 21/30 – 23/30]: fair but with significant shortcomings;
E [≈ 18/30 – 20/30]: performance meets the minimum criteria;
F [≈ 15/30 – 17/30]: Fail – some more work required before the credit can be awarded;
FX [≈ 0/30 – 14/30]: Fail – considerable further work is required.

Teaching tools
During the course, in addition to written texts, PowerPoint presentations and audio and video materials will be used. The analysis of the texts will also be carried out with reference to existing literary criticism. The materials will be made available on Virtuale.
