96561 - History of Music in the Media (1) (LM)

Academic Year 2025/2026

  • Teaching Mode: In-person learning (entirely or partially)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Music and Theatre Studies (cod. 8837)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student: - knows in general the historical evolution of music broadcasting techniques in the media, the production and distribution logic of the different media (radio, generalist television, thematic television, digital platforms); - also knows the structure as well as aspects related to production and reception of some television programmes of relevant historical interest.

Course contents

By the end of the course, students will have a well-rounded understanding of the techniques through which music is disseminated across different media, with particular attention to its circulation on digital platforms. Through a comparative analysis of musical practices in a range of historical and cultural contexts – from the spread of cassette culture to the logics of liveness in contemporary forms of musical production, platformisation, consumption, and sharing on social media, both in Euro-American settings and in Asian regions of the Global South – the course enables students to understand how processes of mediation and remediation shape the production, dissemination, and reception of music. It also provides them with the analytical tools necessary to relate these dynamics to communication studies and to the study of digital cultures.
