Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students will be able to analyze examples of social interaction in different contexts, using the conversation analysis and discursive psychology methodologies. Students will learn to analyze interpersonal communication, addressing both verbal and gestural behaviors (gestures, gazes, body postures).

Course contents

The course topic is institutional interaction. The aim of the course is to analyse the functioning of institutions through the detailed analysis of interaction. A special attention is paid to power dynamics and identity issues.

Assessment methods

Attending students will make a power point presentation of a paper on medical interaction. The paper will be chosen among the list of papers proposed by the teacher. The presentation will be evaluated according to the students' capacity of organizing it also addressing the main themes of the course and the main problematic of medical interaction. The student's oral expression capacity will be evaluated as well.

Non-attending students: oral examination based on the texts listed in the Readings Section.
