Learning outcomes

Course contents

The laboratory Language and social interaction in the classroom focuses on the relevance of language and social interaction for everyday activities at school. Teaching and learning processes will be observed and discussed from an interactional perspective.

The laboratory sets out from the observation of everyday classroom practices with the aim of drawing connections to broader educational issues, such as the social inclusion of children with a migratory background or the achievement of specific didactic goals. For instance, we will explore how the issue of linguistic and sociocultural diversity—frequently invoked within contemporary discourses in and around schools—are reproduced and negotiated in the daily communicative exchanges between teachers and students. The analysis of concrete classroom episodes will serve to uncover the underlying educational ideologies and implicit orientations that inform teachers' and students' everyday practices.

This focus on the discursive and interactional dynamics of the classroom will be declined in relation to different aspects of the daily routine at school. Among these, the laboratory will deal with (a) linguistic and cultural diversity, addressing some of the central concerns related to the issue (e.g., processes of identity construction), (b) the role of the teacher with his/her discursive strategies and implicit educational ideologies, (c) the role of conflict and normativity in teachers’ and children’s everyday experience of schooling, (d) children’s peer social dynamics and the role of the peer group in classroom everyday life, (d) processes of social inclusion and exclusion at school.

An initial focus on the theoretical and methodological foundations of the laboratory will be followed by group work and various activities focused on the challenges that teachers and educators face in contemporary schools.

International students are very welcome to join the course. Course materials can also be provided in English.
