Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should have basic knowledge on anesthesia and resuscitation.
Course contents
Physiology of neurotransmission: action potentials, saltatory conduction, sodium channels and their functioning.
Local anesthetics: pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, relationship between structure and function, routes of administration. Main adverse effects of local anesthetics: allergic and non-allergic reactions.
Systemic toxicity from local anesthetics (LAST): epidemiology, pathophysiological mechanisms, clinical presentation, diagnosis and hints of therapy.
Principles of analgesia. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
Anaphylactic shock: pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, initial treatment.
Principles of basic life support with use of automatic defibrillator (BLS-D). Recognition of cardiac arrest. Chain of survival. BLS algorithms. Practical use of the AED.
Readings/Bibliography
Learning material provided by the teacher.
Teaching methods
Lectures and seminars. Practical exercises of BLS-D by simulating realistic scenarios on mannequins.
Assessment methods
Oral examination:
The exam will consist of an interview with the instructor (and/or an examination board) during which two or three main questions will be asked for each module.
The questions will assess theoretical knowledge, the ability to make connections between topics, and the use of appropriate technical terminology.
Assessment criteria:
The final evaluation will be based on incremental levels:
-
18–19: Rather limited knowledge of the topics covered in the course, emerging only with the instructor’s guidance; expression generally correct.
-
20–24: Limited but autonomous knowledge of the topics covered in the course; expression generally correct.
-
25–29: Solid knowledge of a substantial number of topics covered in the course, with good ability to establish appropriate logical and deductive connections and good command of technical terminology.
-
30–30L: Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of the topics covered in the course, with excellent ability to establish appropriate logical and deductive connections and full mastery of technical terminology.
Teaching tools
Slides, videos, mannequins for high-fidelity simulation.
