Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student delves into the main issues related to the monuments of Ravenna and the connected Byzantine cultural areas in both the West and the Near East, in light of the ideology of the time. This is especially relevant concerning architecture, mosaic decoration, and sculpture during the period from the 5th to the 12th century. The student is capable of conducting research on the topic and communicating the results at various levels of communication.
Course contents
The course will examine the monumental and artistic development of late antique and Byzantine Ravenna, this year with particular reference to the age of the Gothic king Theoderic. The relations between the city and its models (Milan, Rome, Constantinople) will be examined through archaeological and art-historical documentation

Assessment methods
Students who attend at least 75% of the lessons are considered to be attending.
The exam includes an oral interview, during which the student will discuss the issues dealt with. The candidate shall demonstrate an adequate knowledge of the main issues. The interview will be at the same time an opportunity to assess the candidates' ability to orient themselves within the content of the discipline. Any doubts about the characteristics of the test can be resolved, before the exam, by being present during other students' exams.
Top marks will be awarded to students displaying an overall understanding of the topics discussed during the course, combined with a critical approach to the material and a confident and effective use of the appropriate terminology.
Average marks will be awarded to students who have memorized the main points of the material and is able to summarize them satisfactorily and provide an effective critical commentary while failing to display a complete command of the appropriate terminology.
Students will be deemed to have failed the exam if they display significant errors in his understanding and failure to grasp the overall outlines of the subject, together with a poor command of the appropriate terminology.
It may be useful to attend - as spectators - the exam sessions, which are public. Exams are scheduled once a month. Between June and September, exams may be scheduled less frequently due to overlapping excavation missions.

During the lessons professor will use visual media, especially power point that the student can download at the end of the course.
