Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will have a deeper knowledge of the metalanguage and of various aspects of a descriptive-analytical model of the Spanish language; she/he will be competent in all the communication skills of at least the B2 level of the parameters set by the Council of Europe.

Course contents

LINGUISTICS (One semester - Prof. Ana Pano Alamán)

1. Syntax: object of study and trends.
2. Syntactic categories: types of words, locutions, and syntactic groups or syntagmas.
3. Types of syntagmas: nominal, adjectival, adverbial, verbal and prepositional. Structure, function and semantics.
4. Syntactic functions of syntagmas within the phrase.
5. Verbal periphrasis.
6. Values of 'se'.
7. Syntactic analysis: the simple phrase. Subject and Predicate. Position of the elements. Concordance subject-predicate, classes of words.
8. Syntactic analysis: the complex phrase. Coordinates and subordinates (substantive, adjectival, adverbial).
9.Values of 'que' and other polysemic particles.
10. Introduction to discourse.

PLEASE NOTE: Students are reminded that the Exercises course starts in the 1st semester (October) and is a one-year course: it is eminently practical; the exam is based on work carried out in class. For this reason, attendance is essential to pass the test satisfactorily.

Teaching methods

LINGUISTICS

Gradual introduction to:

  • the principal grammatical categories and their formal, functional and semantic aspects within syntagms
  • the different types of syntagm and the mechanisms by which the grammatical categories are related
  • larger structures, from the phrase to the paragraph. Simple and complex phrases and the form, function and sense of statements.
  • the basic concepts related to the syntax or grammar of the text.

All the theoretical aspects explored will be supported by a series of examples and the syntactic analysis of diverse structures.

Assessment methods

LINGUISTICS

Oral exam in Spanish about the theoretical contents of the course, based upon the reading of compulsory bibliography.

IMPORTANT: The student shall succeed a previous written and oral exams (Esercitazioni della lingua) in order to access the oral exam of Linguistics.
