Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will:

- have a basic knowledge of the complex EU legal system;

- know the functions of the European Union, and the relationship between the supranational level and the legal systems of the Member States;

- know and be able to use the EU legal instruments as well as the case law of the EU Court of Justice

Course contents

The course is divided into two sections: the first will be purely institutional; the second will cover the system of rights protection. It will be followed by jurisprudential insights particularly on citizenship and free movement of persons, with nods to migration issues.

Specifically, the following topics will be developed:

- the nature of the European Union;

- the EU institutional system with a special focus on the European Parliament;

- the sources and principles of the EU legal system;

- relations with national legal systems;

- the judicial protection of rights;

- citizenship;

- the area of freedom, security and justice and the free movement of persons (Schengen Area).

The topics of seminars and conferences that will be organized during the course are considered part of the program for those attending.

Teaching methods

The course will be highly interactive, with organized discussions and thematic insights based on the readings provided. Active participation in class is required.
