Learning outcomes

 

The student - knows the tools (grammars, dictionaries and text corporations) and methods (analysis of the meaning of the source text and its transposition into the target text) of basic translation - is able to apply them in the translation of a variety of simple texts from German first language to Italian - is able to identify and apply the most appropriate basic translation strategies to the communicative/operational functions of the texts to be translated.

 

Course contents

 

The course will be divided into two parts: passive translation into Italian (40 hours) and active translation into German (40 hours), both of them during the second semester.

As far as passive translation is concerned, particular attention will be given to the issues of text comprehension and interpretation, initially also with intra-linguistic exercises. Secondly, the focus will be laid on text analysis, communication functions and on the most suitable translation strategies to be adopted. The main theoretical-translational and communicative problems will also be presented in the form of examples.

General texts and semi-specialist texts of various types and increasing degrees of difficulty will be dealt with (operating instructions, advertising texts, promotional and tourist texts, commercial correspondence, newspaper articles etc.).

Students will be guided through the use of translators’ resources (dictionaries, corpora, search engines, etc.).

Critical reflections on pre-existing translations (even with respect to machine translations) and the so-called Leichte Sprache will also be part of the programme.

Students will be called upon to work both in groups, with a view to solving collective translational issues, and individually.

Teaching methods

 

Lessons will mainly take place in workshop-like mode, so as to connect group and individual work, but also in lecture mode. During the lectures, the theoretical-methodological elements that form the basis of the translation, as well as the resources available to the translator, will be introduced.

With respect to the prevalent workshop-like mode of the course, the teacher indicates the most suitable procedures to achieve an appropriate translation (adopted method, paraphrase, translation choices, etc.), without offering the solution. So, the solution will be the result both of the individual student’s work and of his interaction within the group.

A group text will be prepared on a weekly base, and the individual tests will be corrected.

The example of the texts processed will deal with the theoretical-methodological elements of translation, problem solving, translator documentation, etc.

Students are expected to attend at least 70% of the lessons.

Assessment methods

 

As for the passive part of the course, the learning process will be periodically checked on the test that the student will carry out in a group and that he will have to provide to the teacher. This test will be evaluated and then discussed in class. In this way the student will be able to constantly monitor his progress.

An interim test will be held in mid-course (translation of a text of about 200 words, 90 minutes).

All students will undergo a final test; it consists of a translation of a text of about 250 words, 90 minutes.

In all the individual, group and translation tests, students will be able to use the full range of documentary resources available.

The type of exam will be consistent with the types of text used during the course.

The evaluation of the test will be based on the objective of the course. Particular attention will be paid on:

- the absence of linguistic interference;

- the absence of lexical and syntactical casts that limit interpretation;

- the ability to interpret the text correctly in a foreign language;

- the ability to convey the text level, with regard to consistency;

- the ability to convey the pragmatic and stylistic level of the text.
