Learning outcomes
The student knows the principles of language service provision in the field of translation between Italian and Portuguese; s/he is able to implement the main language service provision standards in professional settings.
Course contents
Translation workshop between Portuguese and Italian, focusing on group translation of several short stories by contemporary Portuguese-speaking authors.
After acquiring the rights, the translated stories can be published in digital format, allowing students to actively take part in all the practical steps of a digital book production chain: title search, acquisition of rights, translation, revision, digital layout, proofreading, publication and distribution. The aim is to provide participants with the practical tools in order to apply as translators/publishing scouts after graduation.
For the selection of the short stories, students will be given the opportunity to get in touch with as many Portuguese variants as possible (texts from Portugal, Brazil and Portuguese-speaking African countries), in order to analyse their characteristics and evaluate the best translation strategies to deal with regionalisms, dialects and other language peculiarities.
The authors involved and their works will be contextualised with a brief overview of contemporary Portuguese-speaking literature, which will also be useful for those wishing to specialise in this field, in order to get to know authors, publishing houses, genres and emerging narrative strands.
Authors may be remotely involved during the lessons, in order to solve any interpretative doubts on their texts.

Teaching methods
The lessons are conceived as a laboratory where analysis, documentation, translation, correction and commenting activities are carried out on a narrative text, with short theoretical insights from the teacher on translation techniques and Lusophone literature.
The lessons are held in a computer lab, in order to provide each student with a PC equipped with CAT tools and Internet connection.
An active participation of all students in the proposed exercises is required.
As concerns the teaching methods of this course unit, all students must attend the online Modules 1, 2 on Health and Safety [https://www.unibo.it/en/services-and-opportunities/health-and-assistance/health-and-safety/online-course-on-health-and-safety-in-study-and-internship-areas ]
Assessment methods
The student will take a 150 minutes final exam which will test their mastery of translation methods and techniques required for the press. The final exam consists of a translation of a fiction excerpt from Portuguese into Italian (approx. 500 words) similar to those covered during the course. Students will be allowed to use CAT tools, internet, dictionaries and glossaries.
