Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student knows the most frequent mental disorders, the prevention and intervention models and the risk factors in the general population. The student also possesses knowledge of psychiatric assessment tools applicable to the rehabilitation context.

Course contents

Epidemiology of mental disorder in the general population, in primary care and in the general hospital (including risk factors for the development of mental disorders). Diagnostic criteria in psychiatry.

Descriptive psychopathology: the signs and symptoms of mental disorders.

1) Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.

2) Mood disorders.

3) Anxiety disorders.

4) Obsessive-compulsive disorder.

5) Trauma- and stressor-related disorders.

6) Personality disorders

Teaching methods

Traditional classes.
Teacher-led discussion on clinical cases.                                  Educational videos on the main mental disorders.

Assessment methods

Oral exam with 2 questions: one about descriptive psychopathology and the other about a mental disorder included among course contents.

Teaching tools

Presentations of the lessons in PowerPoint. Material provided during lectures and in-depth meetings. The material is available to students and can be downloaded from a dedicated online space.
