- Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Electrical Energy Engineering (cod. 9255)
Learning outcomes
To provide the basics on the technology of electrical materials from the point of view of their electrical, thermal and mechanical properties in the short and long term, with particular regard to the impact that these properties have on the reliability of power components and systems, and on power quality. To provide also the basics on power quality disturbances of permanent and transient nature, in particular: standard definition, sources, problems caused and propagation models in the distribution networks, compensation systems, hints at measurement equipment and current regulations.
Course contents
The course program is divided into two parts, Part A and Part B, as illustrated below.
Part A (= electrical technologies)
Chap. A.1: Materials in engineering
Chap. A.2: Conducting materials
Chap. A.3: Insulating materials
Chap. A.4: Aging of materials
Chap. A.5: Ferromagnetic materials
Part B (= Power Quality)
Chap. B.1: General concepts on Power Quality
Chap. B.2: Interruptions
Chap. B.3: Voltage dips
Chap. B.4: Harmonics
Chap. B.5: Passive Filters
Chap. B.6: Active Filters
Readings/Bibliography
For the study of the course, Course Handouts provided by the Teacher, can be downloaded online from the course website in the Virtual Learning Environment (https://virtuale.unibo.it/course/view.php?id=25846). For further information, books in English, i.e.:
i) Juan Martinez-Vega (Editor), Dielectric Materials for Electrical Engineering, 1st Ed., Wiley, 2010
ii) M. H. J. Bollen, Understanding power quality problems, IEEE press, 2000.
Teaching methods
The course consists of 6 ECTS, corresponding to approximately 60 hours of lectures, and divided without interruption into:
- theoretical lessons;
- classroom and laboratory exercises;
- seminars.
The objective of the application exercises is twofold:
- to provide practical indications on the application of the concepts learned in the theoretical lessons;
- to supply orders of magnitude typical of the various quantities of engineering interest in electrical technologies and power quality.
The objective of seminars, held by professional experts, is twofold:
- to deepen particular theoretical topics from a practical point of view;
- to provide more direct contacts with application and working realities.
Assessment methods
Verification of learning will take place through oral exam, consisting of two questions on the Course Contents chosen by the teacher: the first on Part A, the second on Part B of the Course Contents
Teaching tools
Handouts taken from the lectures by the teacher , can be downloaded online from the course website in the Virtual Learning Environment (https://virtuale.unibo.it/course/view.php?id=25846), which also include technical and scientific references for gaining a deeper insight into the subject. Username and password are reserved for students enrolled in the course. It is advisable to print these Handouts and take them to class.
The lessons are based on slides in Powerpoint, with more detailed explanations on the blackboard; in the online mode, a graphic tablet will be used instead of the blackboard. Classroom exercises are based on the Mathcad software and on the Power Quality Teaching Toy software.
