Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the students will know the main theoretical and methodological approaches in cultural anthropology; the evolution of concepts such as culture, ethnicity, ethnocentrism, racism; and, finally, how to use some theoretical perspectives in the analysis of social processes such as migration, exclusion and social suffering

Course contents

The course will take place during the second semester (from February 2022) at the Cesena Campus of the Department of Psychology (address: p.zza A. Moro, 90), and on line. The course will focus on the definition and history of the anthropological studies. We will take into account the transformation of concepts such as culture and ethnicity together with the main theoretical and methodological problems faced by the discipline. We will discuss cultural relativism and its limitations, the evolution of ethnographic research and the different theoretical paradigms characterising the anthropological thought. In the second part, relying on empirical examples, we will also focus on the study of multicultural societies, citizenship, transnational mobility and social exclusion.

Assessment methods

With a written exam students will have to answer to three open questions. Books and chapters cannot be consulted during the exam. In some circumastances (students with old programs, erasmus students, students unable to attend and sit at the written exam) the exam might consist in a oral conversation. Also in this case students will have to answer to 3 questions. The aim of the exam is to assess the understanding and assimilation of the main concepts introduced during lectures and discussed in the readings, together with an evaluation of the logical consequentiality with which they are treated.

More precisely

• If the student show a superficial and confused understantig of the main themes of the course will fail the exam

• If the student testify for a sufficient understanding of the main topics but with uncomplete or superficial answers results may wave from 18/30 to 24/30;

•If the student show an accurate knowledge of the main topics and a discrete understanding of the programme as a whole results may wave from 25/30 to 27/30;

•If student show a good knowledge and in depth undersatnding of the main themes discussed together with a clear and accurate communication results will wave from 28 to 30 and exceptionally 30L
