Learning outcomes
The course would make the students be able to analyse the regional policies and their effects on the economic and social development, with particular reference to the EU and Italian regions.
To reach these objectives the students will be able to use the most important regional data bases to study the Regional economical policies (Regio- Data Base Eurostat, Istat-Data Base).
Course contents
The regional policies of the European Union:
- The affirmation of the regional policies in a EU point of view: from a sectorial approach to a territorial one. The integrated programming: the history and the principal differences in the programming period 1989-1993, 1994-1999, 2000-2006 e 2007-2013. The reform of the structural Founds and the development Objectives. The third cycle of the Community Support Framework 2000-2006: the monitoring and the evaluation. The new Strategic Community Framework 2007-2013.
- The regional policies of the European Union in Italy: the ROP and the Community Support Framework 2000-2006 and the new Strategic Community Framework 2007-2013. The new objectives and the targets of the Regional Policies.
- The italian policies of the regional development: the experience of "Patti Territoriali"
- The future of the EU regional policies after the enlargement in 2007-2013.The evaluation of the impact of the regional policies in Europe and in Italy.
-The analysis of Economic Convergence: theory and methods

Teaching methods
The teaching method is based on a specific theory analyses of a regional development issue; then it shows the empirical approach to solve this problem using data and scenario.
Assessment methods
The final examination will evaluate the capability of the students to analyse a Regional political problem through a scenario analysis and also using data obtained from the most important on-line data bases.
Teaching tools
Laboratory lessons will be provided in order to present the main Regional Data Banks about national and international socio-economic data sources.
