Eligibility language requirements and languages available for assessment

The Erasmus+ Study Call for Applications includes, among its eligibility requirements, the verification and possession of specific language competences. In particular:

the minimum language proficiency level required by the Erasmus+ Study Call is A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), as recognized by the Council of Europe;
this language competence must be verified in the language(s) required by the exchange vacancy for which the student intends to apply;
language assessment is foreseen for the languages specified in the exchange vacancy offered under the Call, namely: English, French, Spanish, German and Portuguese;
the eligibility language requirement must be fulfilled by the application deadline established in the relevant Erasmus+ Study Call.
Applications that do not meet this minimum requirement will be considered ineligible due to the lack of the required eligibility criterion.

Important:

in the vacancy details for each exchange opportunity, which will be published together with the Erasmus+ Study Call for Applications 2027/28, the academic coordinator may specify additional language requirements or provide further information regarding the language skills expected from applicants. In addition to being an eligibility requirement for participation in the Call, the language proficiency level may also be considered as an assessment criterion for ranking purposes;
some Erasmus+ partner universities may require a language proficiency level higher than the A2 CEFR minimum required by the Call. Students are therefore strongly advised to carefully check the language requirements of their prospective host institution, including the required proficiency level, the type of language certification (if applicable), and any conditions regarding the validity of certificates or issue dates accepted by the host university.

How to demonstrate language proficiency

To meet the language proficiency requirement, applicants must satisfy one of the following options:

taking a language assessment test organized by the University Language Centre - CLA;
belonging to one of the exempted categories listed in the document Language requirements – assessment methods [.pdf 104 KB].

Language assessment tests organized by the University Language Centre - CLA

Students wishing to apply for the Erasmus+ Study Call for Applications 2027/28 will have the opportunity to take a language assessment test in November 2026, before the publication of the Call.

Registration is mandatory to sit the language assessment test.

Online registration will be open from 30 October 2026 at 12:00 p.m until 10 November 2026 at 12:00 p.m (Italian time), subject to availability.

The language assessment tests will be held exclusively in person between 16 November 2026 and 20 November 2026.

To register for the test, candidates must:

login to their AlmaRM profile using university credentials;
enter the “Gestione carriera” (“Career management”) section and click on “Test di lingua” (“Language tests”);
select “Erasmus+ mobilità per Studio” (“Erasmus+ Mobility for Study”) as the type of test;
choose the language(s) and finalize the procedure

Students can choose the test date and place based on availability, while the time slots are automatically assigned during the booking procedure. Your booking will be confirmed via email to your university inbox.

The Erasmus+ Study Call for Applications 2027/28 will also include another session of language assessment tests, which is expected to take place between January/February 2027.

It should be noted that the early language assessment session scheduled for November 2026 and the January/February 2027 language assessment session (dates to be confirmed) for the Erasmus+ Study Call for Applications 2027/28 are to be considered as a single assessment period.

Students may take language assessment tests in a maximum of two languages, and each selected language may be tested only once across the two sessions combined.

Students can participate in the January/February 2027 session only if they:

did not register for the November 2026 test session;
registered for the November 2026 test session, but did not show up to take the test;
took the test in November 2026 and obtained A1 level;
took the test in November 2026 but did not achieve any level.

Therefore, students who took the test in November 2026 and obtained an A2 level or higher cannot retake the test during the January/February 2027 session in the same language(s).

Recognition as a curricular language proficiency requirement

Students who take a language assessment test may obtain automatic recognition of the test as fulfilment of their curricular language proficiency requirement, provided that they submit an application for the Erasmus+ Study Call for Applications 2027/28 and achieve a language proficiency level equal to or higher than the threshold required for the language proficiency requirement specified in their degree programme.

Categories exempt from taking the language assessment test organised by the CLA

Students who fall within one of the cathegories described in the document Language requirements – assessment methods [.pdf 104 KB] are exempt from taking the language assessment test.

When submitting their application, they may declare their eligibility for exemption and, where required, upload the supporting documentation.
