Language requirements

Erasmus+ mobility for Studies Call for Applications a.y. 2026/27 (not yet published, expected publication date: January 2026): language skills assessment and categories exempt from testing.

To participate in the Erasmus+ mobility for Studies call for applications, all candidates are required to assess their language skills. The languages to be assessed must correspond to those specified in the individual vacancy the applicant is interested in, which will be listed in the Call for applications. These may include English, French, Spanish, German or Portuguese.

A minimum language proficiency level of A2, as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), is mandatory for applicants to  the Erasmus+ mobility for studies Call for Applications. This minimum language proficiency level consists in a general eligibility requirement of the Erasmus+ mobility for studies Call for Applications and  must be met strictly before the application deadline Thus, application of candidates that fail to meet the language requirement level will be considered incomplete and therefore excluded.

Please note: some Erasmus+ exchange partner Universities may require a language proficiency level higher than the A2 CEFR level set by the Erasmus+ mobility for studies call for applications. Therefore, students should carefully check the language requirements of the host institution they are interested in. the students must check the required level, the type of certification (if any) required, and the date of issue or the date when the test has been taken that partners consider as valid.

Furthermore, the academic coordinator may include in the exchange vacancy details (which will be published with the new Erasmus+ Study call for applications a.y. 2026/27) some additional information regarding the required language requirements. The language level is an eligibility requirement, but it can also be used for the evaluation of the application.

Language skills must be verified by satisfying one of the following criteria:

Assessment tests organized by the University Language Centre - CLA

For the Erasmus+ for Studies call for applications a. y. 2026/27, candidates will have the opportunity to take a language assessment test in November 2025, even before the publication of the call (expected in January 2026).

To participate in the tests, online registration is required and will be open from 30 October 2025 at 1 p.m. until 11 November 2025 at 1 p.m. (Italian time), subject to availability.

The assessment tests will be held in person from 18 November 2025 to 21 November 2025.

Registration is required to take the assessment test.

To register for the test, candidates must:

  • log in to their AlmaRM profile using university credentials;
  • enter the “Gestione carriera” (“Career management”) section and click on “Test di lingua” (“Language tests”);
  • select “Erasmus+ mobilità per Studio” (“Erasmus+ Mobility for Study”) as the type of test;
  • choose the language(s) and finalize the procedure.

Students can choose the test date and place based on availability, while the time slots are automatically assigned during the booking procedure. Your booking will be confirmed via email to your university inbox.

For further information and support, candidates may contact aform.accertamentilinguistici@unibo.it from 30 October 2025 to 21 November 2025.

Moreover, an additional language assessment test session will be organized, presumably, between late January 2026 and early February 2026.

Please note: the Erasmus+ mobility for studies call for applications a.y. 2026/27 foresees a single language assessment process, covering both November 2025 and January/February 2026 (exact dates to be defined) sessions. Candidates may sit the test for up to two languages, but only once for each language across both sessions.

Students can participate in the January/February 2026 session only if they:

  • did not register for the November 2025 session;
  • registered for the November 2025 but did not show up to take the test;
  • took the test in November 2025 and obtained A1 level;
  • took the test in November 2025 but did not achieve any level.

Therefore, students who took the test in November 2025 and obtained an A2 level or higher cannot retake the test during the January/February 2026 session in the same language(s).

Students who pass the language assessment test may obtain its automatic recognition as a curricular language proficiency test, only if they submit an Erasmus+ for Studies a.y. 2026/27 application and meet or exceed the proficiency level required by their study plan.

Exemptions from sitting the assessment tests

Students who belong to one of the categories listed in the document Language requirements – assessment modalities [.pdf 206 KB] for the language requested by the exchange may be exempted from sitting the language assessment tests organized by the University Language Centre - CLA.
