Laurea (First cycle degree/Bachelor - 180 ECTS) in Techniques in Medical Radiology, Imaging and Radiotherapy (for certified professional technicians in medical radiology)

Technicians in medical radiology are in charge of radiology scans and services. They carry out, independently or in cooperation with other health professionals, following a doctor’s proscriptions, all the activities which entail the use of ionising radiation sources, both artificial and natural, of thermal, ultrasonic, nuclear magnetic resonance, as well as all work for physical or dosimetry protection.

• Graduates will:

  - know the fundamentals of biology and radiobiology;
  - Know the medical causes, characteristics and needs generated by the priority problems of health within the community in which they operate;
  - have abilities to assess in advance the technical justification, and optimisation and limitation of exposure, conforming to the indications of the European regulations pertaining to protection from radiations.
  - be able to implement the most appropriate techniques of protection from radiations in order to guarantee safety of patients, exposed workers, population and territory.

  - inform the subjects undergoing diagnosis by imaging or radiation treatments about the technology, techniques, protection measures and connected risks.

  - know the basics of IT necessary for acquiring, processing, transmitting and filing the digital images and assessing the process;
  - be able to utilise the IT skills for managing the statistical and dosimetric data;
  - have knowledge of the equipment and technologies, clearly understanding the structures and functions, and developing for each patient the characteristics that best meet the diagnostic and therapeutic needs for the clinical case;
  - know the diagnostic or therapeutic end-purposes of each technique and, whereby defined, the operating protocols;
  - For the optimisation of the dosage, know how to evaluate and decide upon the professional actions which involve the use of artificial or natural ionising radiations sources, thermal and ultrasound energies and magnetic resonance for diagnostic, therapeutic and applied research purposes;
  - will be able to analyse and respond to the request of medical interventions in own area of competence;
  - Be able to utilise first aid techniques in case of emergency;
  - be able to critically assess own work in an outlook of quality improvement of the professional services supplied;
  - have anthropological, sociological and psychological skills useful for developing the ability to understand and relate with medical users, colleagues and other professionals, whether healthcare operators or not;

  - be able to contribute to the organisation of the Operating Unit in which they operate and suggest possible improvement interventions.
