C9989 - LABORATORIO GIURIDICO - CASI DI GIUSTIZIA RIPARATIVA

Academic Year 2026/2027

Learning outcomes

By participating in one of the workshops offered by the social and civic competencies group, the student develops the knowledge and skills necessary for harmonious and productive coexistence. Upon completion of the workshop, the student will be able to draw upon social, civic, historical, and intercultural competencies to analyze the structures, phenomena, and mechanisms at work within the socio-political and legal spheres. They will have acquired the tools and knowledge to engage actively and consciously in public life. Furthermore, they will be equipped to critically interpret significant aspects of public and political life—at national and/or international levels—and will possess the tools and concepts needed to foster a reflective and participatory form of citizenship.

Course contents

The workshop will consist of two parts: the first involves an introduction and presentation by the instructor regarding the fundamental concepts and content of restorative justice and the tool or practice of criminal mediation, contextualized within the framework of European law and relevant national guidelines. The second part of the course features sessions with individuals offering particularly significant firsthand accounts—including professionals working at various levels within the field of restorative justice and people who have experienced it directly in their own lives, whether as crime victims or as offenders.

The objective is to understand the specific nature of this justice model's implementation "in practice" by comparing it with the two traditional models: the retributive model and the rehabilitative/re-educational model. The workshop takes place in the SECOND SEMESTER.

Teaching methods

Guided reading of texts and regulatory documents, seminar work, classroom discussion and dialogue with key witnesses and invited experts, case simulations, and classroom analysis.

Assessment methods

Assessment of the knowledge acquired will be based on class discussions; therefore, attendance and active participation are strongly recommended (indeed, necessary). A final "Pass" grade (IDONEITA')  will also be awarded based on a concluding paper addressing one of the topics covered in class.

The paper—ranging from a minimum of 4 to a maximum of 8 pages (12-point Times New Roman font, 1.5 line spacing)—should focus on one of the themes discussed that is of particular interest to the student. It must include a relevant, in-depth analysis of the theoretical and cultural concepts involved, an examination and discussion of the chosen topic, and a commentary—incorporating personal insights—on one of the sessions held during the course (in addition to a final bibliography).

The paper must be emailed to the instructor no later than the deadline she specifies, following the conclusion of the course.
