Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students will have acquired knowledge of the instruments used to structure a research project on nursing phenomena (questionnaires, interviews, measurement scales).

Course contents

The course presents the instruments used in research to study phenomena of nursing interest, such as measurement scales, questionnaires, interviews and other data collection tools, and guides students in understanding how the data collected through these instruments can be read and interpreted.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Know the main types of data collection instruments in nursing research;
  • Describe the characteristics of measurement scales and the criteria for assessing their quality;
  • Know the principles underlying the construction and use of the main data collection instruments;
  • Understand how collected data can be read and interpreted to describe nursing phenomena.

  • Overview of data collection instruments.
  • Measurement scales: characteristics, use, validity and reliability.
  • Questionnaires, interviews and other instruments: principles of construction and administration.
  • From data collection to data reading: understanding and interpreting what instruments tell us.
