Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide an overall framework of the social, cultural, political, and religious structures of the Greek world, with particular attention to its relations and contacts with other civilizations of the Mediterranean and the Near East. Special focus will be placed on maritime cultures, trade routes—both real and imagined—the study of myth, and its transmission across the transition from orality to writing. By the end of the course, students will acquire skills in the exegesis of literary sources and will be able to employ them for a comprehensive reconstruction of the material culture and mentality of ancient Greek society, spanning from the Mycenaean period to the early Imperial age. Understanding the functions and structures of myth, conceived as a narrative discourse, will also provide the necessary orientation for public communication of archaeological heritage.
