Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide basic skills for digital data collection and processing in the field of Cultural Heritage, from the territorial to the object scale, using the most modern geomatics techniques and technologies. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to evaluate the most appropriate methodologies and approaches for various areas of intervention.

Course contents

The main reference systems in surveying and cartography.

Introductory description of geomatics methodologies at various scales, from the territorial scale to the object: GNSS satellite positioning, total station, laser scanning and structured light projection, digital photogrammetry and image analysis techniques, thermography, use of drones and multispectral data.

Creation and use of 3D models with metric content using integrated techniques: from point clouds to meshes and derived products.

Monitoring methods, notes on integration with diagnostic techniques.

Operational approaches in surveying an archaeological site or in detail object digitizing in museum settings.

Readings/Bibliography

Study materials and additional resources are provided or suggested, along with slides and lecture notes. The Virtuale platform is used.

Teaching methods

The course is complemented by practical sessions involving advanced instrumentation and computer-based exercises, primarily using open-source software.

Assessment methods

The final examination is a written test consisting of both open-ended and multiple-choice questions administered through the EOL platform, with the possibility of an oral examination if deemed necessary. The assessment is designed to evaluate the achievement of the intended learning outcomes, with particular reference to the main characteristics of the geomatics techniques covered in the course and the ability to identify and apply appropriate solutions to specific case studies,

Regarding learning assessment by the final examination, the use of AI is prohibited. Any use constitutes a violation of academic integrity.

Teaching tools

Classroom lectures are supported by multimedia support.

Specific software is provided to students for use on their own laptops for the computer-based exercises.
