Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to represent the molecular structure of organic compounds and correlate it with their chemical and physical properties. They will also acquire the basic knowledge required to identify and characterize simple organic molecules using the most common spectroscopic and instrumental techniques (UV, IR, NMR, and mass spectrometry).
Course contents
The course guides students from the representation of a molecule to the experimental verification of its structure through the interpretation of data obtained by UV-Vis, IR and NMR spectroscopy, as well as mass spectrometry.
1-Review of organic chemistry. Representation of organic molecules; major functional groups and their structural features; resonance, conjugation and isomerism.
2-Basic principles of the main spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques: UV-Vis spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry.
3-Structural characterization using spectroscopic techniques. Identification of the main functional groups by IR spectroscopy. Recognition of conjugated systems by UV-Vis spectroscopy. Interpretation of 1H NMR spectra (chemical shift, integration, multiplicity and coupling constants). Use of mass spectrometry for structural identification.
4-Applications. Structural elucidation of simple organic molecules through guided exercises based on the integrated use of the different techniques.
Examples involving molecules of herbal and environmental toxicological interest will be presented.

Assessment methods
Assessment consists of an oral examination aimed at verifying that students have understood the topics covered during the course and are able to interpret UV-Vis, IR and 1H NMR spectroscopic data related to simple organic molecules.

The request for adaptation must be submitted in advance (15 days before the exam date) to the lecturer, who will assess the appropriateness of the adjustments, taking into account the teaching objectives.
