Learning outcomes

Students will develop comprehensive knowledge of safety in the use of chemicals, focusing on human health and safety aspects in final applications, and will explore safety considerations in recycling within the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) methodology. They will assess chemical hazards, understand material properties, and learn principles of designing for recycling. The student is expected to be able to: 1. Identify and assess physical, toxicity, and ecotoxicity hazards of chemicals, and implement proper safety measures in handling and use; 2. Analyze and apply material properties and structural knowledge to ensure safety and performance in various applications, with an emphasis on sustainable practices; 3. Design materials and products with recycling in mind, considering lifecycle assessment and material recovery.

Course contents

In the Prof. Bonoli module, in particular, the Design for Recycling approach will be considered, covering the related concept, rules and guidelines.

In design for recycling, the suitability of a product design for recycling is analyzed, with products designed for easy disassembly and the use of compatible raw materials.

Teaching methods

Expositive lectures presenting the basic concepts and state of the art in the field, and exercise seminars.

Assessment methods

Each student is required to discuss a specific subject, supported by a personal ppt presentation.

Particularly evaluated will be the student's ability to move within the cultural themes of the discipline. The achievement by the student of an organic vision of the subjects for their critical use, the demonstration of possessing an expressive and specific language will be valued with excellence marks.
