Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, the student will be able to:

Explain the psychological and occupational effects of shift and night work on healthcare professionals;

Identify and describe core strategies for managing sleep in the context of healthcare work;

Evaluate the role of sleep quality in supporting the well-being of patients and caregivers.
Course contents
The course explores the psychological implications of sleep quality and shift work in healthcare settings. It focuses on the effects of sleep deprivation and fatigue on attention, vigilance, memory, emotional regulation, communication, and patient safety. Behavioural strategies for sleep management and recovery will also be discussed, together with the nurse’s role in identifying factors that may hinder or promote rest in patients and caregivers.
Teaching activities will combine theoretical input with brief practical exercises, case discussions, and the analysis of situations commonly encountered in nursing practice.
