Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students will have acquired the knowledge and skills related to the analytical processes covered by this seminar.

Course contents

Preparatory course for the practical internship, consisting of two modules (36 hours in total) delivered through lectures.

 

MODULE 1: Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry (24 hours – 2 ECTS)

a) Analytical Chemistry in the biomedical laboratory

  • Introduction to Analytical Chemistry.
  • The analytical process: pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical phases.
  • The role of Analytical Chemistry in laboratory diagnostics.

b) Analytical measurement

  • Qualitative and quantitative analysis.
  • Accuracy, precision, sensitivity, specificity and measurement errors.
  • Principles of quality control and validation of analytical methods.

c) Main analytical techniques used in biomedical laboratories and their principles

  • Optical techniques: spectrophotometry.
  • Separation techniques: high-performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography and electrophoresis.
  • Electrochemical techniques: potentiometry.
  • Immunochemical techniques (antigen-antibody reactions): ELISA, CLIA and FEIA.
  • Mass spectrometry-based techniques: mass spectrometry and tandem mass spectrometry.

d) Analytical data

  • Interpretation of analytical results.
  • Principles for interpreting the main instrumental outputs.

 

MODULE 2: Pharmaceutical Production Techniques (12 hours – 1 ECTS)

  • Introduction to the activities of the Hospital Pharmacy.
  • Pharmaceutical production and Good Preparation Practices for medicinal products.
  • Sterile and non-sterile galenic production.
  • Principles of artificial nutrition: parenteral nutrition mixtures, clinical and pharmaceutical aspects, and formulation of parenteral nutrition mixtures.
  • Pharmacology of antineoplastic agents and therapeutic regimens.
  • Computer-assisted preparation and aseptic, safe handling of antineoplastic therapies.
  • Clinical trials and the production of investigational medicinal products.
  • Laboratory visit.

Assessment methods

MODULE 1

Multiple-choice test and open-ended questions. In the event of failure to pass the written assessment or inability to attend the examination session, the examination will consist of an oral examination.
