Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will acquire the knowledge and skills required for the geometric and functional design, as well as the management, of railway infrastructure in both extra-urban contexts (including conventional and high-speed railway lines) and urban environments.

Course contents

The course is organized into two main thematic areas:

RAILWAY SYSTEMS

Railway infrastructure: railway vehicles, historical overview, wheel–rail interaction.

Railway structure and track components: rails, sleepers, fastening systems, rail joints, ballast, sub-ballast, and ballastless track systems.

Track thermal behaviour: continuously welded rail (CWR).

Railway earthworks design: embankments and cuttings; transitions between railway embankments and engineering structures; railway underpasses and temporary support systems for railway lines.

Railway maintenance and diagnostics.

Line signalling systems.

TRAMWAY AND METRO SYSTEMS

Railway vehicles and vehicle dynamics. Track structure and track components. Integration of tramway systems within the urban environment. Tramway and metro line design and maintenance

The course consists of classroom-based theoretical lectures.

Assessment methods

The final examination consists of an oral examination including two questions: one covering the Railway Systems module; one covering the Tramway and Metro Systems module.
