Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide students with the theoretical and analytical tools needed to understand the economic function of the institutions that make up the welfare state, with particular attention to the healthcare system.
The first part of the course will examine the objectives, historical evolution, sustainability, and current organization of the main social protection policies, as well as measures aimed at reducing poverty and inequality.
The second part of the course will focus on health economics, the evolution of health policies in Italy, and processes of integration between healthcare and social care services, with specific reference to the role of the third sector and to regional differences.
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
· critically assess the evolution of the welfare state and the social protection system in Italy within a comparative international perspective;
· understand and apply tools for measuring poverty and inequality, and analyse public policies aimed at addressing them;
· analyse the institutional structure, financing, and organization of the Italian healthcare system, and assess its main reforms over time;
· understand policies aimed at integrating healthcare and social care services, with particular reference to services for people with long-term care needs;
· evaluate forms of collaboration and governance between the public sector and the third sector in the design, regulation, and provision of health and social care services.
