Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should reach a minimum level of A2 (Council of Europe framework) for spoken German, while the ideal level is B1, and a minimum level of B1 for reading comprehension – ideal level B2. Students should be able to understand written texts of average difficulty regarding the disciplines of the degree course and to understand a news broadcast and make a simple oral report on it.
Course contents
The course is organised into two distinct sections. One section consists of a 30-hour course designed to reinforce and improve students’ written and oral comprehension and expression skills, whilst also deepening their cultural understanding of the German-speaking world.
The lessons will offer a brief introduction to discourse analysis and will focus in particular on certain key moments in social and collective memory within the German-speaking world, exploring the relationship between history and historical narrative. Particular attention will be paid to framing and the genesis of political concepts.
Another section, comprising a 40-hour workshop, is designed to deepen students’ knowledge of the German language through practical exercises.
Each student will therefore undertake a total of 70 hours of classroom-based learning.

The course will be taught mainly in German.
Assessment methods
The course comprises two mid-term assessments, plus a final oral examination. The first two mid-term assessments consist of a written comprehension test and tests on grammar and vocabulary.
The oral examination, which is conditional upon passing the two mid-term examinations, will focus on a selection of the materials used during the course.
In particular, the level of in-depth understanding and communicative proficiency achieved will be assessed, with particular attention paid to comprehension and interaction skills in the language.
Scores awarded:
30–30L
Excellent level of the required linguistic knowledge and skills.
27–29
Good level of the required linguistic knowledge and skills.
24–26
A valid performance, but with obvious errors and gaps indicating only partial acquisition of the required knowledge and skills.
21–23
A satisfactory performance, but with noticeable limitations in the knowledge and skills to be acquired.
18–20
A performance that meets only the minimum criteria for the knowledge and skills to be acquired.
