Learning outcomes

Knowledge of the italian and european technical drawing's rules for the representation of mechanical components.



Course contents

Conventional drafting tools. Standardized lines and symbols. Selection of formats and scales.
Computer-aided drafting tools. Description of hardware and major peripherals. Architecture of a CAD system. Functions performed by the software.
The method of orthogonal projections and sections of solids.
Standards and conventions in technical drawing. Representation of threaded components. General dimensioning criteria. Reading assembly drawings (overall) and drafting detail drawings.


Guide to three-dimensional modeling and setting specifications to derive the construction drawing from the 3D model.
Conventional representation of mechanical elements, with particular reference to standardized components used in chemical plant engineering (threaded components, flanges, pressure vessels, piping, joints, etc.).


Laboratory exercises will be conducted on mechanical components, both by hand and using PTC’s On-Shape software.
During the exercises, several assembly drawings will be examined to identify the main components responsible for connections.


Students will be able to understand how these components function and how to represent them correctly: Specifically, they will be able to create both hand-drawn drawings on paper using tools and 3D models of mechanical components, as well as their corresponding two-dimensional construction drawings using CAD.

Teaching methods

The laboratory course is worth 3 CFU and includes theoretical lectures focusing on the basic rules of industrial technical drawing, which ensure that students have the necessary tools to create two-dimensional drawings in accordance with Italian and European standards.


The theoretical lectures are complemented by practical exercises—both freehand using conventional tools on paper and using the On-shape CAD software—and students are provided with assistance in creating mechanical drawings using this software.


Assessment methods

The final exam is designed to assess whether the course objectives have been met:

  • Basic knowledge of mechanical design in accordance with Italian and international standards;
  • Knowledge of On-shape software and its use for creating mechanical drawings in accordance with standards.

The exam consists of a drawing test that includes both freehand and CAD drawing exercises.

For freehand drawing, students will be required to produce orthogonal projections and/or sectional views of simple components and/or drawings of the main threaded connections.

For the CAD drawing portion, students will be required to create a 3D model of a simple mechanical component using the same CAD software used for exercises during the course, and to generate the construction drawing from the model.
The grading of the written exam is contingent upon the presentation and discussion of the technical drawings produced during the course.

Given the characteristics of the examination, which requires the preparation of a specific paper for each call, students who have acquired the status of student worker/athlete may not request alternative or additional calls.

In accordance with the University’s Code of Ethics, students are reminded to act with the utmost integrity. Any activity intended to improperly alter the outcome of exams is prohibited (e.g., cheating, plagiarism, accessing online educational resources, or using unauthorized AI tools). Please note in particular that the mere possession of unauthorized devices or materials during an exam will result in the immediate cancellation of the exam and a report to the relevant offices.
Behavior that violates this prohibition may lead to disciplinary proceedings or reports to the competent authorities, if criminally relevant; in the latter case, there is a risk that the students involved may face criminal proceedings.


Teaching tools

Classes will be held in the computer lab under the direct supervision of the instructor, where students will have access to computers on which they can create CAD drawings using On-shape software.


The software runs in the cloud, so it does not need to be installed on a computer; students only need an account accessible via an internet connection, which will be created in class through a management system controlled by the instructor.

Note. As concerns the teaching methods of this course unit, all students must attend Module 1, 2 on Health and Safety online.
