Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide students with an expert knowledge of the socio-cultural and historical-political factors which have contributed to the changes that the Spanish language has undergone over time and is still undergoing, with special focus on Spanish as an International Language. The students are introduced to the most influential contemporary theories regarding complex issues such as language spread, shift, death, and language planning and policies, as well as the debate between prescriptivism and non-prescriptivism. They are expected to be able to identify diachronic, diatopic and diastratic variation and the linguistic and cultural features of standard and non-standard and native and non-native Spanishes. Moreover, they are given the opportunity to develop their research competence and presentation skills, either orally or in written form. Language classes aim at improving students’ linguistic competence; over the two year period students’ knowledge of Spanish should reach an equivalent level to C2 in accordance with the European framework in all four abilities. These classes will work in connection with the lectures to improve students’ writing skills in particular.

Course contents

The subject of HISTORY OF THE SPANISH LANGUAGE is divided into two courses taught by two different teachers, respectively Professor Binacchi for the THEORETICAL CLASSES (LEZIONI FRONTALI) and Professor Reyes Carvalho Martí for the PRACTICAL CLASSES OF LANGUAGE (ESERCITAZIONI).

PROF.SSA BINACCHI (Lezioni frontali): Name of the course: “Fundamentos históricos de la lengua española para entender el presente” (Historical foundations of the Spanish language)

The course will guide the student in the study of the key events in the history of the Spanish language and it aims at providing the students with a diachronic perspective, which will expand the student's previous knowledge. This course will also develop their critical comprehension of the current status of the Spanish language as a pluricentric, national and international language. Given that all activities will be developed in Spanish, all students must have achieved a C2 level in Spanish according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages in order to enroll in thiscourse .

Firstly, the topics of the course will be dealt with from an external perspective, that is, through a chronological systematization of the ideological and social factors that have contributed towards the linguistic change of the Spanish language.

The contents will be:

-the pre-Roman languages in the Iberian Peninsula

-the origins of Castilian

-the School of Translators of Toledo

-from Latin to medieval Castilian

-from medieval to modern Castilian

-the RAE and lexicographic milestones

-Galicians and foreign influences

-the Spanish of America

-orthography treaties between Spain and the Americas

-the multilingual articulation of today Spain

Secondly, the linguistic change will be dealt with from an internal perspective, through the analysis of the main events in the evolution of the spelling, the phonetics and the phonology, as well as of the morphosyntax and the lexicon during the different periods of the history of the Spanish language.

PRACTICAL LANGUAGE CLASSES ON HISTORY OF THE SPANISH LANGUAGE

(Required Spanish level C1-C2)

Through a range of texts, students can analyze and focus on the grammatical structures of the C2 level.

The reading material will be made available for the students with some articles about the situation of Spanish Language today (from a socio-political and cultural point of view) in Spain and Hispanic America.

-Linguistic comments on texts with the aim of strengthening written competence in the Spanish language.

-In-depth study of the complex structures of the grammar of the Spanish language corresponding to the required level.

-Reading and understanding of articles related to the different situations of current Spanish from a sociolinguistic point of view.

-Comments and analysis of the linguistic policies of Spanish at national and American level.

Hours: 36hs during the first term

N.B. ERASMUS students should contact the teachers of Esercitazioni di History of Spanish Language (Ana Reyes Carvalho Martí) and of History of Spanish Language (Benedetta Binacchi) in the first two weeks of the course to find guidance on the required level of language, the curricula and examination modality of both parts of the subject. Students who have not written to the teachers at least 2 months before the exam will not be admitted.

Teaching methods

The language of instruction is Spanish, the classes will be in person, partly face-to-face and partly seminar, in which the student will be expected to participate actively through group exercises in the classroom. Individual or group presentations will also be assigned on relevant topics of the subject, through which the student will put the acquired scientific research tools into practice.

The course aims at verifying the linguistic competence attained during the practices (starting level C1):

The student shall succeed the written exam of ESERCITAZIONI (Practices on Spanish Language) in order to access the oral exam of History of Spanish Language LEZIONI FRONTALI lectures (Prof.ssa Binacchi).

1. Examen escrito (Written exam on topics related to Esercitazioni course programme, duration: 2 h)

The exam will consist of an oral interview in the language (starting level C1), which will focus on the contents of the program, and therefore both on the mandatory readings (see bibliography) and on the notes of the lectures given by Professor Binacchi.

In the classroom the student may also optionally:

1. A written in itinere on-going test on the first part of the programme (which the student will therefore not have to present for the final oral examination)
2. Oral presentation of a short research paper, during the final lessons, agreed upon with Professor Binacchi, relating to the course program, which will have the value of 1 to 2 additional points on the result of the final oral exam.

Both the written on-going test and the presentation of the research work are optional and not compulsory.

The final mark, which will be registered, will be the result of adding 1/3 from the lettorato mark and 2/3 from the mark achieved in the oral exam with Prof.ssa Binacchi.

The purpose of the oral exam is to verify the student's ability to apply his or her own knowledge and to make the necessary logical-deductive connections.

Gradation of mark:

Preparation on a very limited number of topics covered in the course and analytical skills that emerge only with the help of the teacher, expression in overall correct language → 18-19;

Preparation on a limited number of topics covered in the course and ability to analyze independently only on purely executive issues, expression in correct language → 20-24;

Preparation on a wide number of topics covered in the course, ability to make independent choices of critical analysis, mastery of specific terminology → 25-29;

Substantially exhaustive preparation on the topics covered in the course, ability to make independent choices of critical analysis and connection, full mastery of specific terminology and ability to argue and self-reflect → 30-30L.

 USE OF AI

Regarding learning assessment, the use of AI is prohibited for assessment tests conducted in an uncontrolled environment, which will be validated after analyzing the work materials produced and mandatory delivery, including through a possible oral interview.
