Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student knows the relationship between economy and culture; how to analyse and interpret the internal mechanisms of the market of cultural industry and creativity; and the parameters and tools required in order to work as an organizer or manager of temporary or permanent initiatives in cultural heritage sectors like museums, archives, libraries, publishing, television, or multimedia.

Course contents

The relationship between art and the economy.

Economic and artistic value of cultural goods and services.

The market for cultural goods and services. Supply and demand for art goods and services.

The economic role of criticism.

The book market. Supply and demand for reading. Economic structure and market trends. The effect of digitalization. Concentration in the publishing market.

The fine art market. Supply and demand for visual art. Originals, copies, and fakes in the fine art market. Primary, secondary, and auction markets.

The museum market. The economic sustainability of cultural markets and the role of the public sector.

Oral exam based on the published syllabus.

The syllabus and exam procedures are the same for both attending and non-attending students.

Candidates are graded according to the following criteria:

• Insufficient preparation and analytical skills: failed. • Sufficient preparation and analytical skills, expressed in formally correct language: 18-22.

• Technically adequate preparation, sufficient analytical skills, not particularly complex, expressed in correct language: 23-26.

• In-depth knowledge of the topics covered in the course, good analytical and critical skills, command of specific terminology: 27-29.

• Very in-depth knowledge of the topics covered in the course, critical analysis and connection skills, command of specific terminology: 30-30L.

Students may decline a grade once by submitting a written communication.
