72816 - Laboratory of Bridge Design M

Academic Year 2026/2027

  • Teaching Mode: In-person learning (entirely or partially)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Civil Engineering (cod. 6709)

Learning outcomes

Beside completion of the knowledge acquired in the BRIDGE DESIGN M parallel course and upon completing the required credits, the student learns to design of a simple beam bridge (either a prestressed reinforced concrete bridge or a two-beam bridge with a steel-concrete composite structure). During laboratory activities, the design and dimensioning aspects of beam bridge decks and related substructures are thoroughly explored. The concepts covered are subsequently utilized in numerical and graphical applications, allowing the student to develop solid operational skills for a swift entry into the professional bridge design sector.

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons mainly at the blackboard (occasional use of Power-Point slides).
Numerical applicative examples at the blackboard.
Revision of the individidual design projects developed by the students with the help of a tutor.

Assessment methods

Each student will have to develop either alone, or in collaboration with another student or at most two other students, a design project of a girder bridge, complete with calculation report, executive technical drawings and selected construction details.

First, the assessment will consist of evaluating the design of a girder bridge developed by the student. It will consist in:

1. examination of the technical drawings
2. analysis of the technical report
3. calculation and design criteria and technical drawings of the construction details

Second, the oral exam, in the form of a discussion of the project, carried out at the same time as the BRIDGE DESIGN M exam, is aimed at checking if the student is able to apply the theoretical aspects in a specific applicative example of bridge design.

Regarding learning assessments, the use of AI is
prohibited. Any use constitutes a violation of academic integrity.
