Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will have gained an understanding of the basic elements of the culture and civilisation of Spanish-speaking countries; they will be able to independently develop further knowledge and analytical and cultural skills relating to the societies of these countries.

Course contents

Un viaje a las culturas hispánicas: un encuentro entre Mundos diversos.

The course aims to provide an introduction to Hispanic cultures through various thematic pathways, designed as a journey in search of the multi-faceted identity of the Hispanic-American world. The aim is, therefore, to discover the diverse voices that coexist within the pan-Hispanic world through a variety of approaches: geographical, historical, folkloric, literary, artistic, musical, cinematographic, theatrical and gastronomic.

To this end, students will read and analyse materials from various artistic disciplines to foster understanding through aesthetic experience.

Students will be expected to analyse texts from different artistic disciplines (literary, cinematic, theatrical), spanning different eras and regions (Spain, Argentina, Cuba, Mexico, Chile), whilst consistently exploring the relationship between biographical experience and the cross-cutting search for a sense of identity arising from the discovery of theother.

Teaching methods

The chosen teaching approach is in line with the principles of cooperative learning in a Smart Classroom environment; consequently, the lectures and various types of exercises require the active participation of the students.

Assessment methods

Oral examination in Spanish based on knowledge of the material covered during the course and the required reading. The examination will begin with the student’s presentation of a cultural topic of their choice, agreed in advance with the lecturer.

Assessment criteria

30–30L: Very broad, comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of the subject matter; a well-established ability to apply theoretical concepts; excellent command of presentation skills; and outstanding ability to analyse, synthesise and draw interdisciplinary connections.

27–29: Precise and comprehensive knowledge of the subject matter, good ability to apply theoretical concepts, analytical and summarising skills, and confident and accurate presentation.

24–26: Appropriate knowledge of the subject matter, reasonable ability to apply theoretical concepts, and a well-structured presentation of the content.

21–23: Appropriate but not in-depth knowledge of the subject matter, only partial ability to apply theoretical concepts, acceptable presentation of the subject matter.

18–20: Sufficient but general knowledge of the subject matter, simple presentation, uncertainties in the application of theoretical concepts.

< 18 – Insufficient: Fragmentary and superficial knowledge of the subject matter, errors in applying concepts, inadequate presentation.
