Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the module, the student is able to apply knowledge and understanding to midwifery practice in gynecological, obstetric, and neonatal settings, in accordance with midwifery principles and within a team-based work environment.
Course contents
- Physiological changes during pregnancy - Assessment of maternal and fetal well-being: maternal and fetal parameters, their characteristics, and reference ranges - Obstetric examination: parameters to be assessed and reference ranges - Leopold maneuvers and symphysis-fundal height measurement - Clinical assessment of the woman following spontaneous delivery or Caesarean section: uterine involution, lochia, bowel function, urinary output, hygiene, wound dressing, and inspection of vaginal sutures and breasts - Assessment of the healthy newborn: monitoring vital signs, physiological weight loss, and umbilical cord stump care - Metabolic disease screening: theoretical overview and sample collection technique - Vaginal swabs: theory and sample collection technique - Urine and stool cultures: theory and sample collection techniques - Indwelling and intermittent bladder catheterization: theory and insertion technique - Gynecological examination and use of the speculum - Clinical assessment of women undergoing gynecological surgery - Clinical assessment of women undergoing gynecological procedures in a day-hospital setting - Pain: types and assessment scales - MEOWS scale
