Learning outcomes
At the end of the seminars, the student can identify and evaluate the main topics of current research in the fields of tourism and urban economics, and deepen the analysis through a brief essay.
Course contents
The course explores models, technologies, and tools for the design and governance of Smart Cities, with particular emphasis on the role of local governments and the strategic use of public-sector information assets.
The course will examine digital infrastructures, the Internet of Things (IoT), Urban Data Platforms, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Open Data, and artificial intelligence applications, highlighting their contribution to decision-making processes and the development of innovative urban services.
Particular attention will be devoted to the integration of territorial and geospatial data, interoperability, cybersecurity, digital inclusion, and governance models.
The course will also explore the relationship between digital transformation, sustainability, territorial competitiveness, tourism, and service quality.
The aim is to provide students with methodological and practical tools to understand and design integrated and sustainable Smart City strategies that address the needs of citizens, businesses, and local communities.
By the end of the course, students will be able to identify the main Smart City models, understand the role of data and digital infrastructures, and assess the use of data in urban governance and decision-making processes.
Readings/Bibliography
All the slides used during the course will be made available to students and will also include references to relevant bibliographic sources for further individual study.
Teaching methods
The course will be delivered through lectures complemented by case studies and practical examples from both Italy and other European countries.
Topics will include Data Platforms, GIS, Open Data, digital services, mobility, tourism, sustainability, and artificial intelligence.
The sessions will include opportunities for discussion and guided interaction with students.
Contributions from external experts will complement the theoretical framework with professional and practical perspectives.
The teaching approach will be aimed at developing students’ critical analysis skills and their understanding of the main Smart City design models.
Assessment methods
Learning will be assessed through a questionnaire covering the main topics addressed during the course.
The assessment will be complemented by group interviews with students.
The interviews will be designed to assess students’ ability to connect theoretical concepts with practical applications in urban and territorial contexts.
Together, these two methods will make it possible to evaluate both the knowledge acquired and students’ ability to interpret and apply the topics covered.
Teaching tools
During the sessions, multimedia presentations specifically prepared for each individual lesson will be used.
Students will be provided with all the slides used throughout the course.
The materials will include definitions, diagrams, examples, case studies, and references related to the topics covered.
The presentations will serve as a support tool for individual study and further in-depth exploration.
